This body of work traverses the stories of this transient landscape to highlight the dance between culture, identity, place, and craft that is represented by the Everglades and the many Black and Indigenous stories that have called home. &nbsp; &nbsp; The main installation, Porch Passages: Creole Collage,&nbsp; reimagines the shotgun house, a staple vernacular architecture of the U.S. South and Caribbean. Showcasing an architectural language of creolization, this structure influenced by the merging of craft and culture embeds the stories of Miami’s Black and Caribbean community into it’s materiality. Through a series of mixed media wood collages created in collaboration with the archives of Black Miami Dade and it’s Founder Nadege Green. The Stories of Black Miami Dade become enshrined in memory and depiction of the architectural form. The central seating of the reimagined shotgun house creates a porch pace, creating a moment for reflections, preservation, and imagination. Not only does the installation archive, and document these stories, but it provides a space for them to be actively lived, performed, and preserved for&nbsp; future generations. It prompts us to ask, “How will we continue to archive our own stories?” &nbsp; &nbsp; As much as the built environment serves as a space of hybridity and creolization, so does the natural environment of South Florida. Tapping into the histories of Maroonage and the communities of enslaved people finding liberation within Florida's landscape, the paintings in this exhibition visualize bodies camouflaging amongst the lush flora of the region. Amplifying the stories of the Salt Water railroad, a journey through Florida's wilderness to freedom in the Caribbean; and stories of Seminole Maroon communities, these works reframe our relationship with the natural world. It places these intersectional identities in the landscape as a place of refuge. There is a deep sense of belonging as these diasporic communities take root in this landscape where the foreign and familiar dance, merging into one unified rhythm. &nbsp; &nbsp; Driftwood embraces the multilayered histories and experiences of South Florida’s transient diasporic communities. Bodies become borderless as they dance amongst the landscape merging into a creolized collage of being; creating new identities and a sense of home. In South Florida, Marronage calls to mind Seminole communities, freedmen, and Black and Afro-Indigenous peoples who sought refuge in the state’s natural landscapes—building self-sustaining societies within the wild. &nbsp; &nbsp; This body of work carries the movement and spirit of masquerade traditions such as Junkanoo, along with other African practices that have traveled through these landscapes, bridging the Caribbean and the U.S. South. It speaks to movement, migration, history, and deep rootedness in place. Dance is explored between landscapes and cultures, creating a borderland where identity is always in motion, always in flux. The figures merge with the environment, becoming a humanoid form intertwined with the flora and terrain of these territories. &nbsp; &nbsp; In Tulloch’s Glades Guardian diptych, the figure serves as a self-portrait of the artist as well as a stand-in for the Maroon figure: a vessel for memory, presence and reclamation. Our protagonist works to restore imagery missing from personal and collective histories, filling the gaps left by erasure. These connections, rooted in oral traditions, research, and lived experience, are carried forward here in visual form. These works reinscribe the landscape with its own guardianship. &nbsp; &nbsp; In Eclipse, the green-scarred figure reappears, this time in the shadowed palette of an eclipse. The astronomical event of the eclipse is more than background: it shapes the tides, stirs the instincts of animals, and alters the rhythms of the natural world. In this piece, its pull mirrors the figure’s own alignment with the landscape, where cycles of light and darkness reveal novel ways of seeing. Woven into this moment is the presence of the bushman from Jamaican culture, someone who may seem untethered from society, yet is bound closely to the land, moving with its cues and reading its signs. In this space, solitude is a deeper form of belonging, and a state in which the figure is both apart from and a part of the eclipsing world around him. At the center, a void holds the gaze, an opening where eclipse light, landscape, and self meet, and where stillness itself becomes a kind of movement. &nbsp; &nbsp; Garifuna honors the presence of Maroon societies and their histories across the Americas, depicting Kaysy Gotay and her lineage of Garifuna. The Garifuna trace their Afro-Indigenous ancestry to St. Vincent, where a Maroon community was later exiled to Central America. It is a story of place-making, of home as something continually remade. As these identities traversed new landscapes, their culture adapted, absorbing and enriching itself through each new space. Upright in her power, strength, and poise, the subject meets the viewer’s gaze directly. The surrounding flora carries the symbolism of plants significant to the Garifuna people, while the palette reflects the vivid greens and reds of the quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird. Rooted in deep research and personal interviews, this intimate portrayal embodies both the subject’s lineage and the living legacy of one of many enduring Maroon heritages today. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, Porch Passages: Creole Collage, brings Cornelius Tulloch’s Porch Passages series to the Melton S. Mustafa Concert Hall, in a new, site-responsive iteration. Porch Passages began as an inquiry into the veranda as a civic instrument, cultural archive, and storytelling space. Tulloch’s work reimagines porch ornament, tectonics, and material presence as an architectural language that registers diasporic memory and daily life across Miami’s Black and Caribbean communities. &nbsp; &nbsp; Originally realized for the Florida Prize at the Orlando Museum of Art, Porch Passages: Creole Collage was designed to be an adaptive, site-responsive, modular architectural installation. This iteration foregrounds sustained community research and has expanded the installation into a public stage and vessel for testimony and intergenerational exchange. &nbsp; &nbsp; Under Knight New Works, the project integrated summer youth workshops led by Tulloch and Arsimmer McCoy: AHCAC and Miami Fab Lab students authored poems and 10 x 10 inch collages that were digitized and fabricated into breeze-block inspired panels, embedding student work throughout the modular, architectural installation. The outdoor public activation Porch Passages: Liberty debuted concurrently with the exhibition opening, serving as a complementary public moment of activation, performance, and community celebration. &nbsp; &nbsp; “The porch is where stories gather and stay,” Tulloch says. “This project returns those stories to the people who live them, in Liberty City and greater Miami-Dade.” &nbsp; &nbsp; Porch Passages: Creole Collage opens Saturday, November 29, 2025 and runs through Saturday, January 17, 2026; at the Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. /> &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Angisa: A Language of Living is a solo exhibition held at the Andrew Reed Gallery from July 11 to August 16, 2024. The exhibition explores the cultural history of Suriname, focusing on creolized cultures through painting, collage, photography, and installation. Inspired by his 2023 residency in Suriname with the Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Institute, Tulloch examines the Angisa, a traditional Afro-Surinamese headkerchief, as a symbol of storytelling and cultural preservation. &nbsp; &nbsp; The exhibition includes works that blend figures and natural landscapes, exploring themes of Marronage and masquerade as tools of survival and identity. Using cold wax, UV printing, and mixed media, Tulloch combines photographic archives with painterly techniques to create layered, dimensional works. Pieces like The Raft of Samaaka and Forest Teller reflect his personal relationships with Surinamese communities and explore connections between history, memory, and the natural world. &nbsp; &nbsp; The gallery features decorative wood carvings, sublimation-printed tapestries, and hanging Angisas that highlight Suriname's Maroon heritage and Dutch colonial influences. Locust Projects from December 5, 2023, to February 17, 2024. This architectural installation creates a communal space for cultural exchange, storytelling, and creative expression. &nbsp; &nbsp; Set in the ruins of a Miami home’s porch space, the installation reflects on the dystopian future shaped by climate gentrification in the city. Through projection, video, and architectural interventions, Poetics of Place poses questions about the cultures at risk of being lost amid rising tides and new development. The work explores the memories and presence of Miami’s past, present, and future, offering a cultural stage for what must be preserved. &nbsp; &nbsp; Tulloch, as both an artist and architect, uses the installation to highlight underrepresented stories and lived experiences of Miami’s Black communities. The project examines how space shapes cultural identity and how cultural identity cultivates landscapes.
